La Casa Cultural, Website Design

Project Brief

As part of my eight week design ethics course, our class focused on solving a problem for La Casa Cultural on campus in the form of a website. Each student would focus on a problem of their choice and design to “solve” that problem.

Process

A lot of my early work was focused on researching immigration resources and realizing how hard it was to find concise information and resources to assist in immigration and DACA status–especially in light of COVID-19. So many offices
were shut down, everything cost so much money, or took super long to get approval for papers, or had several prior steps that weren’t clearly laid out. It was all very stress inducing, even as a citizen. After speaking with La Casa representatives and thinking about some of the issues that were identified, my solution was to inform about the importance of immigrants in America and why the process to become a citizen shouldn’t be so difficult.

I was inspired by information being presented in dynamic ways using text, color,
and shapes to emphasize it. After playing around with different shape potentials (hexagons, squares, diamonds), I settled on circles. I wanted them to contrast the stress inducing information like how the USCIS still wasn’t processing DACA applications post-COVID.

Struggles & Takeaway

The biggest thing I struggled with was inserting myself into the problem. The struggles on immigration and obtaining legal status is something that I’m very concerned with, especially after seeing how hard it is to obtain paperwork, but I
was worried that it wasn’t my place to be a part of the conversation. I just wanted
to express my concern and come up with a project that accurately depicts that concern and care.
